1870: A Bad Place for a Fight

Crazy Horse and High Back Bone led a horse-stealing raid against the Shoshone. “It was in the fall,” remembered He Dog. “There was a drizzly rain turning into snow.” When their band came upon the Shoshone encampment, Crazy Horse resisted. He believed that they were outnumbered by the enemy. High Back Bone was itching for a fight; he insisted upon attacking. The lifelong friends agreed to disagree. The raid was on. The Shoshone responded immediately with a mounted counterattack. High Back Bone’s horse was wounded and went down. The enemy pushed back the Lakota and killed High Back Bone. Crazy Horse and his men were forced to retreat. Crazy Horse felt he had no choice but to leave his friend—the same friend and teacher with whom he had learned to hunt as a youth. Together they had fought many battles, including the time they acted as decoys in the Fetterman Fight. Days later, Crazy Horse returned to retrieve the body of his best friend. Coyotes had beaten him to the fallen warrior. All that remained were shredded body parts.
